The BFG (2016) Summary (Spoiled)

MAIN CHARACTERS 

SOPHIE:
A 10 years old, orphan girl who lived in an orphanage. Sophie was so brave, kind, curious, and intelligent girl. At beginning, an old giant grabbed her and took her to the ‘’Lands Of Giants’’. But later she became best friend of that old giant, whom she called BFG. 

BFG (Big Friendly Giant):
He was very gentle and kind hearted old giant. Instead of eating humans, he collect dreams and delivers them to children at night. He lacks confidence because he was always bullied by other huge giants. Through Sophie’s encouragement, he became braver and plays a key role in stopping that evil giants. 

The Villain Giants:
They all were evil-giants especially, Fleshlumpeater, the leader. They all were Cannibals. They always tried to bully BFG because of his small size as compared to them. 

The Queen:
She was really kind-hearted and wise lady. When Sophie and the BFG seek help, the Queen listened carefully and believe their story. She played an important role in organizing the plan to capture the evil giants, showing leadership and open-mindedness. 

The movie started with a night scene. At the beginning, a young girl of about 10 years old was shown. That sweet little girl’s name was Sophie. Her parents had passed away, and because of that, she was living in an orphanage. Sophie had insomnia of sleep, due to which she stayed awake the whole night and kept wandering around the orphanage. Like the other children, she was also afraid that a mysterious old man with a bag would come at night and take her away. That scene was then shown where, one night, Sophie was lying on her bed and reading a book. 

Suddenly, she heard the sound of a cat. She opened the window and looked outside, where she saw that some cats had knocked over a dustbin. Just then, she noticed a very large hand that was putting the dustbin back in place. After that, a huge giant man appeared from behind the building, and Sophie saw him. The giant had also seen Sophie. Seeing him, Sophie became very scared and ran back to her room. However, the giant put his hand through the window, grabbed Sophie, and took her away with him. The giant usually did not come in front of humans. He always tried to make sure that no human could see him, because he was afraid that if humans found out about giants, they would kill them. The giant took Sophie to a new world called the Land of Giants, where only giants lived. 

He then took her to his home. Sophie saw that it was a very large house where everything was much bigger than her size. Sophie tried to escape from there, but the giant saw her and said that there was no way to escape from this place, so she could not go anywhere. Hearing this, Sophie became very frightened. The giant also looked quite old in appearance. Meanwhile, the giant placed Sophie in a frying pan and said that he is very hungry that he could not control it. Hearing this, Sophie became extremely scared and thought that the old giant was going to eat her. Just then, Sophie notices the sound of other giants. Sophie asked the old giant, “What are these scary noises?” 

He told her that those were the other giants. He explained her they were much bigger than him, and they were all cannibals; who only eat raw, fresh human beings. They had no mercy on humans, whoever came into their hands, they would eat them. Hearing this, Sophie became even more worried and frightened. Out of fear, Sophie asked the giant, “Are you going to eat me?”. The giant replied kindly, “No, I do not eat humans. I am a vegetarian; I only eat vegetables.” The vegetables that the old giant ate were very unpleasant in taste. In reality, he was a very kind and gentle giant Sophie asked surprisingly, why he had brought her there if he did not eat humans. He replied that, ‘’ because you had seen me, and I was afraid that you would tell everyone about me. That was why I had to bring you there’’. 

He also told her that now she would have to spend her whole life there with him. Hearing this, Sophie said, she would run away from there. The old giant warned her not to make that mistake, because the other giants outside would show no mercy and would eat her immediately. Then, old giant placed Sophie in a boat and told her to rest. But Sophie could not sleep, so she kept sitting there and started watching the old giant. She saw that he was taking out some bottles from a bag. Inside those bottles, there was something glowing. She asked the giant, “What is inside these bottles?” He replied that they contained dreams. Hearing this, little Sophie said, “Then they are of no use to me because I cannot sleep and I do not see dreams.” 

After that, the giant started reading the book that belonged to Sophie. Meanwhile, Sophie fell asleep. After that the old giant opened a bottle and took out a dream from it. At that moment, Sophie woke up and saw that the giant was sleeping. She tried to escape and went outside his house. As soon as she stepped outside, a huge giant caught her and ate her. This giant was much bigger than the old one. Suddenly, Sophie woke up, it meant that she had been having a nightmare. Sophie asked the old giant, “I know you did all this, because I cannot sleep or see dreams.” The old giant gently explained, “I had to do this so I could show you how dangerous it is outside for you.” He further explained that all the other giants were much bigger than him. He said that he was the smallest and also quite old, and the other giants called him names like “runt.” Just then, a huge giant suddenly entered the old giant’s house and said, “So, who were you talking to? Who else is here besides you?” The old giant replied, “No, I wasn’t talking to anyone.” Meanwhile, Sophie hid somewhere. 

Actually, the huge giant had hurt his hand, so he had come to the old giant to get it bandaged. Since the huge giant was a cannibal, he could smell human flesh easily. That was why he started inspecting everything in the house carefully. Meanwhile, Sophie hid inside the old giant’s unflavored vegetables. When the huge giant smelled the vegetables, he detected the scent of a human, Sophie, inside them. The huge giant had never eaten vegetables before, but this time he smelled something very appealing because Sophie was hiding there. 

He started trying to eat the vegetable, but the old giant quickly stopped him and said, “How can you eat this? Have you forgotten that you are a cannibal?” The huge giant replied, “Yes, how could I forgot it. I do not eat disgusting vegetables.” He then threw the vegetable away, and in this way, Sophie’s life was saved. Then the old giant had to go somewhere. Sophie asked him, “Where are you going?”. He told her that he was going on an important task. Sophie asked, “What important task?” He did not want to tell her at first, but after Sophie insisted repeatedly, he finally explained that he was going to catch dreams. Sophie insisted that he take her along, but he did not want to because it was very dangerous outside. 

Many huge giants were asleep outside, and if even one of them woke up, it could be very difficult. Despite this, because Sophie kept insisting, he agreed to take her with him. When they went outside, many giants were sleeping. Suddenly, one giant opened his eyes. They started to taunt the old giant, asking, “Hey, runt, where are you going?” Bon replied that he was going on his work. The giants warned him that they did not want him to go into the human world because it would put their lives in danger. The giants began teasing the old giant, so Sophie ran and hid in a carriage. The old giant pointed to the sky and said, “Look, clouds are forming; it means it is going to rain.” Actually, all the giants were very afraid of water because they had a phobia of it. Soon, it started raining, and all the huge giants ran away. 

Taking advantage of the situation, the old giant escaped with Sophie. They began climbing a mountain and kept walking, eventually going beyond the clouds. Sophie said, “From here, the stars look so beautiful.” The old giant said, “I can even hear their music.” He explained that he could hear every sound in the world bees, ants, and even the stories of trees. “My ears are so sharp that I can hear every sound in the world,” he said. Hearing this, Sophie said, “I cannot believe what you are telling me.” The old giant replied, “Child, this is the truth, you must have to accept it.” After that, they reached a lake with a very big and beautiful tree nearby. The old giant and Sophie jumped into the lake. On the other side of the lake was the world of dreams. They both arrived there safely. 

Dreams fell from the tree like drops, and the old giant came there to catch them. These dreams included both good and bad dreams. After collecting the dreams, they began to return. By now, Sophie and the old giant had become very good friends. The old giant also told her his sad story. He explained that all the other giants called him “Runt,” but there were some who also called him the “Big Friendly Giant.” Hearing this, Sophie said, “Okay, from today I will also call you the Big Friendly Giant, BFG.” BFG was truly a kind-hearted giant. Sophie asked him if his parents had ever told him about dreams. BFG explained that giants do not have parents. He told her that giants have existed since the creation of the world, but they always live hidden from humans. At that moment, they realized that Sophie’s blanket had been left behind in the world of giants. Because of this, BFG became very worried and told Sophie that he could no longer take her back with him, as now the other giants would know about her. Then he told Sophie a story. 

He explained that a few years ago, there was a child who was very sweet and innocent, just like her. That child had also seen him, so he had brought the child to the world of giants as well and even taught him to read. BFG told her that the blanket she had left behind had also belonged to that little child. But before he could return it, the other giants had found the child and eaten him. BFG said, “Now you are my friend. I do not want what happened to him to happen to you.” For this reason, BFG started taking Sophie back to her orphanage. However, Sophie did not want to go there, so she jumped from the balcony. BFG caught her and brought her back to the world of giants. By now, all the other giants were waiting for Sophie and BFG. They began breaking into BFG’s house, searching for her. At that moment, BFG burned the blanket that smelled like Sophie and told all the giants to leave his house. Then Sophie noticed a picture of the Queen on the wall and got an idea. She told BFG to create a dream for the Queen that showed the world of giants and how dangerous they were, eating children. She asked him to include both her and herself in the dream so that when they met the Queen in real life, she would recognize them. 

 

The BFG (2016) Ending Explained

BFG agreed and made the dream, though it was not perfect. Then then went near the Queen’s house and added the dream into her sleep. When the Queen saw the dream, she woke up frightenedly and shared it with her caretaker. The caretaker reassured her, saying it was only a dream and she should not worry. The Queen, still concerned, and ordered to pull back the curtains and found Sophie standing there. 

Sophie explained everything about BFG and the giants and promised the Queen that she would not reveal anything about BFG. Then BFG appeared in front of the Queen, and after some initial hesitation, the Queen listened to them. Sophie and BFG told the Queen the whole story. The Queen decided to help and sent her entire army using helicopters. BFG then created another dream that showed all the giants feeling ashamed of the wrong things they had done. 

Sophie took the dream bottle to the giants and broke it. All the giants saw the dream and felt ashamed, but because the giant leader had woken up, he did not see the dream and attacked Sophie. BFG quickly rescued her. Since BFG was small compared to the huge giant, the giant picked him up and tried to hurt him. At that moment, the Queen’s army arrived, captured all the giants, and placed them on an island surrounded entirely by water. Because the giants were afraid of water, they fled up the mountains on the island. Then the Queen’s army used helicopters to drop vegetable and fruit seeds onto the island. 

Now, to survive, the giants had no choice but to grow the seeds and eat vegetables. In the end, it was shown that Sophie no longer lived in the orphanage. She lived in the Queen’s magnificent palace and could talk to BFG whenever she wanted. BFG was also very happy in his own home, and both of them lived happily.
